Academic Rules, Regulations and Policies at Iran University of Medical Sciences (IUMS)
 

Article 1: Each academic year consists of two semesters (fall and spring) and a summer term, if required.
Article 2: Each semester consists of 17 weeks while the summer term lasts 6 weeks. Theoretical, practical, and laboratorial or internship courses / classes may be offered during each academic period as determined by the respective programs / schools.
Article 3: The credits for each course are determined based on the unit system.
Article 4: In each semester, first and second year students in the MD or PharmD Program are required to take a minimum of 12 and allowed to register for a maximum of 20 credits.
NOTE 1: If a student acquires a minimum GPA of 17.00/20 in a semester, s/he may register for a maximum of 24 credits granted they receive approval from their academic advisor.
Article 5: Each theoretical and practical (or laboratorial) unit will contain 17 hours of theoretical class or 34 hours of lab work / sessions respectively within an educational semester or summer term.
Article 6: Participation in the Basic Sciences Comprehensive Exam is allowed up to three times. If the student fails to acquire a passing grade in the exam, s/he will no longer be allowed to pursue the MD or PharmD Program.
NOTE 2: If the student fails to acquire a passing score in the Basic Sciences (MD) or Pharmaceutical Comprehensive Examination during their first 4 years or are unable to finish the first and second academic stages within 5 years from enrolling in the MD or PharmD program, they will not be allowed to continue studying in the aforementioned programs.
Article 7: Assessing the student’s improvement in each semester is based on the student’s attendance in classes, participation in class activities and test results (quizzes, midterm & final examination). The course director or professor(s) for each class are the authorities with the final decision for each student’s assessment.
Article 8: The overall academic performance of each student for each course will be determined based on all contributing components / factors as outlined in the course syllabus which will be a numeric score between 0(zero) – 20(twenty).
Article 9: The minimum passing grade for general courses, basic sciences, and physiopathology is 10, the minimum passing mark for theoretical courses during clinical training and all relevant educational components in the third and fourth stages of medical education is 12.
Article 10: The final grade for courses will be reported / posted within a maximum of 10 days following the final exam to the Office of Educational Affairs and the students.
Article 11: The GPA for all courses registered in each semester should not fall below 12; otherwise, the student will be conditionally registered for the following semester / term.
Article 12: Students can omit a maximum of two courses or register for two additional courses in the first 2 weeks from the beginning of each semester, provided that the registered credits do not fall below or exceed the limits noted in article 6.
Article 13: Students can omit only one of the theoretical courses up until 5 weeks to the end of each semester if they receive approval from the Office of Educational Affairs, provided that:First
: The total number of hours they have been absent / missed classes does not exceed 4/17 hours.
Second: The remaining credits do not fall below 12 units.
Article 14: Omitting all registered courses in a semester before the 17th week is allowed only if:
First: unapproved absences from classes do not exceed 4/17
Second: the student is not able to continue their education in that semester as determined by the Office of Educational Affairs
Article 15: The presence of students is necessary in all sessions and clinical rotations / internships (Not applicable for PharmD students).
Article 16: For MD students, the total hours of absence must not exceed 4/17 for theoretical lessons, and 1/10 for practical trainings, internships and workshops. Otherwise, the final grade for that course would be reported as zero.
For PharmD students, the total hours of absence must not exceed 4/17 for theoretical courses, and 2/10 for labs, practical trainings and / or internships. Otherwise, the final grade for that course would be reported as zero.
Article 17: If the absence hours for a student in a subject exceed the limits noted above and are recognized as justified, that subject will be dropped / omitted. In such cases, observing the minimum of 12 credits in a semester will not be necessary and that semester will still be counted / considered as a full / complete semester in the student’s academic record.
Article 18: Unjustified absence from the final exam is considered as receiving a score of zero on that subject. A justified absence leads to either omission of that subject or will be rescheduled by the professor for the student to be taken at a different date / time.
Article 19: If the total absent hours (justified or unjustified) in each theoretical, practical or internship course exceed the pre-noted limits, the student must repeat the total course.
Article 20: The University’s Educational Council decides if the absences from theoretical classes, practical courses, internships and examination sessions are justified or unjustified.
NOTE 3: The University will provide in writing a document which indicates the conditional status of the student. A copy of this document will be kept in the student’s records. The student will sign and agree to the terms for their conditional status, to confirm that s/he has been informed of the rules, regulations and consequences.
NOTE 4: The students on conditional status are not allowed to select more than 14 units in that semester.
Article 21: If a student receives conditional status for 3 semesters in the 1st or 2nd stage of MD or PharmD program, s/he will not be allowed to continue their studies in these programs.
Article 22: The maximum duration for the MD Program is 10 years (the first 5 years is allocated to the first and second stages and the next 5 years to the third and fourth stages). The maximum duration for the PharmD Program is 9.5 years.
